With the proverbial second half of the season about to begin, there is no question the Blue Jays have to upgrade at second base, either now or in the off season. Brett Lawrie may well fill the void at second base, but of course that would leave a hole at third. Earlier this week, the Yankees inquired about Padres switch-hitting third baseman Chase Headley and were basically told he wasnt available. Headley, after a stellar season a year ago, is only batting .229 with seven homers and 31 runs batted in this time around. Still, he is highly regarded and will become a free agent after next season. At some point, San Diego may be forced to move him if they cant agree on a new contract. But failing Headley, maybe the Blue Jays should take a look at Padres second baseman, Jedd Gyorko. Gyorko won the Brooks Wallace Award in 2010 as the best Division 1 shortstop while playing at West Virginia. Hes playing second base now with the Padres, mostly due to the presence of Headley. His defence is considered average at best, yet hes only made one error at second this season with a .996 fielding percentage. Scouts figure his best position, though, is third base where in a brief stint this season hes made two errors. Gyorkos only 24-years-old and in just his first year in the majors. Hes known most for his bat, hitting .272 so far this season with eight homers (six in May) and 25 runs batted in. Its interesting, as well, that his manager at Double A San Antonio last season was Blue Jays skipper John Gibbons. So there is a connection. Gyorko may not be available, since hes only making $490,000s this season and wont be eligible for arbitration until 2016 and free agency until 2019. Hes the type of player a smaller market team such as San Diego would be likely to hold onto. Still, it might be worth a call because you know the Jays wont be in the bidding for Robinson Cano in the off season to fill that 2B void. A year ago, much was made - and rightly so - of Baltimores incredible record in one-run games (29-9), the best win percentage in that category in the modern baseball era, as well as their 16-2 record in extra-inning games. Both combined to be a big factor in putting the Os in the post-season for only the third time in 20 seasons. For whatever its worth, there are two teams in the American League and one in the National on somewhat similar runs this season. Oakland is 19-11 in one-run contests and 7-3 in extra inning decisions. Cleveland, maybe a bit of a surprise, is 18-9 in one-run games and 5-1 in extra innings. Both teams have deep bullpens, though Clevelands underachieved a bit in the first half. In the National League, Arizona is 21-12 in one-run games and 10-4 in extra innings. On the flip side of that, though in the Senior Circuit, St. Louis is only 12-10 in one-run games and just 1-4 in extra-inning games, yet the Cardinals lead the National League Central, by a game on Pittsburgh and have the best record in the majors at 57-36. You could excuse the Boston Red Sox for looking over their shoulders and hearing footsteps. After a tremendous first half under John Farrell, they cooled off a bit, going 5-5 heading into the break and their Division lead is down to two-and-a-half games on hard-charging Tampa Bay, which has won 14 of its last 16. The prime concern with the Bosox is their starting pitching, and in particular Clay Buchholz. The veteran right hander, who was putting up Cy Young-like numbers in the first half, is still being bothered by pain in the back of his right shoulder. Hes had two MRIs this season that found bursitis but no structural damage in his shoulder. Buchholz was due to be examined again at some point on Friday to try and discover if there is something more wrong that might have been missed earlier. If Buchholz ends up gone for the long haul and Jon Lester continues his up and down ways, Boston may have trouble even holding on to a wild card spot unless they can deal for a top notch starter. The Rays look like the team to watch the rest of the way. Theyve won nine out of 10 and 14 of their last 16. Their starting rotation, including David Price, is almost completely healthy again and Alex Cobb, who got nailed in the head with that line drive, could be back in a couple of weeks. The Rays staff has put together 15 consecutive quality starts, shattering the club record of nine set three years ago. This is not the team, the Blue Jays needed to be facing coming right out of the chute at Rogers Centre to begin the second half. If the Jays finish the season in the second division and miss the post-season, they need look no farther than their record against their own division to see why. They are only 18-27 against the East with 31 to go. Theyd have to win 20 of the remaining 31 just to hit the break-even point of 38-38, and that doesnt figure to be nearly good enough. WIMBLEDON, London -- Andy Murray was toiling away, oblivious as the murmurs went around Centre Court. But his mother, Judy, was beaming in his players box.Confirmation that Novak Djokovic was out of Wimbledon started to spread through the crowd. Minutes later the world No. 2 was made odds-on favourite to win his second title here. The seismic shift in the mood started to dawn on Murray when Centre Court erupted as the result of Djokovics defeat to Sam Querrey flashed on the scoreboard. If you see a result or hear the fans, then you think about it, he later admitted in a press conference. Thats natural. You dont just not see whats going on. But it wasnt going through my mind for more than 10 or 15 seconds while sitting at the change of ends. Then you get on with it. Its irrelevant to me during todays match; I needed to win today. Now it was about holding his nerve as he served for a two-set lead against?John Millman. But having already failed to take two set points up 5-3 on the Australians serve, he was instead broken back, with Millman levelling the second set at 5-5.Murray was understandably tight, but he refused to push the panic button. After a 14-minute game, he broke Millman straight back, turning a potential lemon into lemonade, as John McEnroe observed on ESPN.The Scot pumped his fist in the air, re-energising not just himself but the crowd, encouraging them to get more involved. Returning to his chair at the change of ends, he screamed, Right now! and jabbed his finger toward the turf, ready to serve again for the set.He hasnt looked so fired up since, well, winning Wimbledon in 2013.There was to be no looking back now. Murray held and, the wind in his sails, broke again at the start of the third set. He went on to close out a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win that was sealed with an ace after 2 hours, 10 minutes on court. The bookies dont always get it right, the new favourite said with a smile. Theyve made a few mistakes over the last few weeks across a number of different things.Indeed, Britain was also odds-on to stay in Europe -- but Murray was in no mood for an exit here.?If I was to reach the final, then it [Djokovics defeat] may have some bearing, he added. It doesnt right now. My draw is still exactly the same. The match in the next round is especially tough. The run that Novak has had has been incredible, so everyone expects him to wwin every match.dddddddddddd But history suggests thats not going to happen. Theres going to be a match where maybe you dont play your best and your opponent plays great tennis.Rather than it being a surprise, it should really be almost celebrated now, what hes actually done. I mean, its incredible. He broke a number of records, winning all four slams, 30 consecutive Grand Slam matches. Its amazing.I would imagine today hed be disappointed. But looking back, its been probably the best 12 months in tennis for years.Unbeaten in eight matches since reuniting with Ivan Lendl, Murray is smoothly through to the second week of Wimbledon without dropping a set. He is the first player in the bottom half of the draw to reach the last 16, with several of his rivals now playing catch-up due to the interruptions caused by the rain this week.A meeting with either Nick Kyrgios or Feliciano Lopez awaits him in the fourth round on Monday. Richard Gasquet, John Isner and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are in the mix to face the British No.1 in the quarterfinals, with Juan Martin del Potro -- conqueror of Stan Wawrinka in the second round -- a potential threat in the semifinals, should his wrist hold out.Murray will be confident. He was already being backed to reach what would be a third final in SW19, but now -- significantly -- the man who has beaten him in five of their seven Grand Slam final meetings, including at the first two majors of 2016, wont be on the other side of the net, should Murray get there.A certain Mr. Roger Federer might be, though. Denied a record eighth Wimbledon title by Djokovic the past two summers, Federers claim on Friday night that Djokovic was clearly beatable proved true, and the Swiss will fancy his chances if he meets Murray here in the final, having beaten him there in 2012.The top half of the draw is now wide open, with?Queens finalist Milos Raonic -- being coached here by McEnroe -- and world No.6?Kei Nishikori lurking to challenge the 17-time major champion.A forlorn Djokovic also revealed in his press conference afterward that he is not going to play Davis Cup. That will be music to the ears of Murray, Leon Smith and the rest of the Great Britain team ahead of their quarterfinal later this month. ' ' '
