England need to be smarter with the bat as they continue to grow as a limited-overs side, says Nasser Hussain. Eoin Morgans side posted just 134-8 at in the first T20I against South Africa at Newlands, despite being positioned handsomely on 52-1 in the seventh over of their innings. The Proteas only secured victory off the final ball of the match when Reece Topley fumbled a run-out opportunity, but Hussain insists the seamers error was not the reason for Englands defeat, which followed a 3-2 loss in the preceding ODI series. Watch as Reece Topley had an easy stumping to win the first T20 for England Topley will be absolutely distraught - but it wasnt his fault England lost that game, Hussain told Sky Sports, after the tourists shipped five wickets for 29 runs in the middle overs. The damage was done a lot earlier.England are little gung-ho with the bat at the moment - in the last three or four games of white-ball cricket they have not worked out what a good score is.I think you have to give them a little bit of leeway, tell them to continue with this free spirit for a while, and hope they realise they have to be a bit smarter.[Captain] Eoin Morgan and [coach] Trevor Bayliss are very rarely critical of Englands batting as they dont want any doubts about whether what they are doing is the right thing and dont want the players to worry about the stats heading into the World T20. We hear from Eoin Morgan, Faf du Plessis and Imran Tahir after South Africas win Hussain, though, saluted Englands bowlers for the way they set about trying to defend 134, including Ben Stokes, who took 1-19 in the middle overs and Chris Jordan, who returned career-best figures of 3-23.The bowling was brilliant, added the former England skipper. Topley bowled well at the start, Stokes was magnificent when the game was going away from them and Jordan, who was lifted by Stokes, proved why he is in the side with his yorkers. Ben Stokes dismissed Hashim Amla during an excellent bowling performance The spinners, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, were excellent and the attitude in the field was outstanding, so they deserved Topley to get that stumping chance at the end.England were in a game they should never have been in - South Africa captain Faf du Plessis says his team dodged a bullet - but they messed it up in the last nine or 10 deliveries. Will England level the series in Johannesburg on Sunday? SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw believes parity might finally hit womens basketball after seeing Connecticut win an unprecedented fourth consecutive title last postseason.I think well have a year where maybe well see a different No. 1 every other week like the men had last year, which I thought was really exciting -- unless were the ones that are not No. 1, she joked Monday. The Fighting Irish, like Baylor, Tennessee, Stanford and several other teams, have most of their best players returning. The Huskies lost three-time AP Player of the Year Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson.McGraw said shes hoping there is parity.I think its going to be great for the game, she said. This was the year nobody lost a lot of talent except for Connecticut. So I think that really evens things out.McGraw, who guided the Irish to a national championship in 2001, believes this years Irish team might be the most talented shes coached. She believes 6-3 forward Brianna Turner (14.6 points, 7.3 rebounds), the Atlantic Coast Conference player and defensive player of the year as the Irish went 33--2 last season, is the nations best player and senior Lindsay Allen, who averaged 9.dddddddddddd3 points and 5.8 assists, is the best point guard.Allen has started every game in her three seasons at Notre Dame, leading the Irish to a 106-6 record. The Irish had gone to five straight Final Fours until they were upset 90-82 by Stanford in a regional semifinal last postseason, only their second loss in the past three seasons to a team other than Connecticut. Gone from that Irish team are Madison Cable (13.7 points) and Michaela Mabrey (6.8 points), but the Irish add a pair of talented freshmen in Jackie Young and Erin Boley, and get back Ali Patberg, who sat out her freshman year after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.Despite being confident in her team, McGraw said she wouldnt rank the Irish No. 1 to begin the season.I would put us in the top five. There are a lot of good teams this time of year, she said. We havent earned anything. I want to earn it. ' ' '
