TROON, Scotland -- Like many golf fans around the world, Jack Nicklaus was riveted by the final round of The Open on Sunday. And he believes the play of winner Henrik Stenson and runner-up Phil Mickelson surpassed that of his famed encounter with Tom Watson known as the Duel in the Sun.Our final round was really good, Nicklaus wrote on Facebook,?but theirs was even better.Stenson matched a major championship record by shooting a 63, becoming only the second player to do so in the final round and win.Mickelson, a five-time major champion who won the 2013 Open, stayed mostly shot for shot with Stenson until the end, his bogey-free 65 not enough.I was fortunate to watch every second of todays final round of the Open Championship, and I thought it was fantastic, Nicklaus wrote. Phil Mickelson played one of the best rounds I have ever seen played in The Open and Henrik Stenson just played better -- he played one of the greatest rounds I have ever seen.Stenson, 40, became the first male Swedish golfer to win a major championship and moved to No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking.Mickelson, 46, was bidding to become the fourth-oldest major winner and join Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino with six majors. His score of 267 was 11 strokes better than third-place J.B. Holmes?and?would have won 140 of the 145 Opens played.Phil certainly has nothing to be ashamed of because he played wonderfully, Nicklaus wrote. Henrik played well from the beginning to end. He drove the ball well; his iron game was great; his short game was wonderful; and his putting was great. Henrik was simply terrific. To win your first major championship is something special in and of itself, but to do in the fashion Henrik did it in, makes for something very special and incredibly memorable. Im proud of and happy for Henrik.Nicklaus, 76, won The Open three times as part of his 18 major championships. But one of the more memorable tournaments was his 1977 loss to Watson at Turnberry, about 20 miles south of Royal Troon.Watson and Nicklaus had the same score through 54 holes, shooting the same score each round -- including third-round 65s.Grouped again for the final round, Watson shot 65 to Nicklaus 66 in what is considered one of the sports epic showdowns. Nicklaus finished 10 strokes ahead of Hubert Green, who famously quipped afterward: I won the golf tournament. I dont know what game those other guys were playing.Wrote Nicklaus on Sunday: Some in the media have already tried to compare todays final round to 1977 at Turnberry, with Tom Watson and me in what they called the Duel in the Sun. I thought we played great and had a wonderful match. On that day, Tom got me, 65-66. Our final round was really good, but theirs was even better. We just needed one. Weve been saying it all along. Now we got that one, and now we have to flip the script and get ready for Tulane. But let coach Chad Morris and his gang enjoy this one for maybe a day at least. Morris, a Dallas native, took the job after the program collapsed following several promising seasons under June Jones. The laid-back former NFL coach took the Mustangs to their first bowl game since the programs shutdown -- and they went to four in a row.But a losing season in 2013 was followed by an embarrassing start in 2014, and Jones abruptly quit two games into the season. With a season-ending win at Connecticut in 2014, SMU avoided a second winless season since 2003. It was the seventh one-win campaign, though, since 1990.Morris debut last season was as rough as Jones in 2008, but the Mustangs showed promise early this year by staying with high-scoring Texas teams Baylor and TCU before fading in the second half of both games. There was no fade against the Cougarrs in SMUs fourth win in 20 tries against Houston since returning from the death penalty.dddddddddddd The first game was a 95-21 loss. The last time the Mustangs (3-4, 1-2 American) beat a team ranked 11th or higher, they were No. 4 and finishing off a near-perfect 1982 season (11-0-1) with a 7-3 victory over sixth-ranked Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl. SMU tied No. 7 Texas A&M in 1994.After the game, to see our student body and our former players and some of the alumni out there, I dont know how long I stayed out there taking pictures with them, Morris said. But the `Thank yous. `Coach, we thank you. Weve been waiting on something like this, to give us life back in this program. They were so close a few years ago and it went down from there. The Mustangs lost senior quarterback Matt Davis to a season-ending knee injury, and Hicks threw nine interceptions in his first four starts. Now he has 486 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions the past two games. The first game was a 43-40 overtime loss to Tulsa two weeks ago. When we came off the field against Tulsa that was as hurt of a locker room as Ive ever been part of, Morris said. For two weeks weve had to respond. And I shared with them that if we could all respond the right way, great things were coming.Great things came quickly.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
