PHILADELPHIA -- David Wright sure likes Philadelphia, even if the city isnt so fond of him. Wright homered, tripled and matched a New York Mets record with four extra-base hits to back Matt Harveys latest splendid start in an 8-0 victory over the Phillies on Sunday. "This guy is tired, beat up, yet he rides it when you need him," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "Ive been around stars, and this guys as good as any of them." Wright, who has spent his entire 10-year career playing for one of Philadelphias biggest rivals, hit his 17th home run at Citizens Bank Park. He went 4 for 5 with two of New Yorks season-high seven doubles, raising his numbers at the Phillies home field to .296 with 43 extra-base hits and 58 RBIs in 80 games. With the Mets making a major marketing push to get Wright elected to start next months All-Star game at Citi Field, the third baseman is batting .405 with 14 extra-base hits in his last 17 games. "It would be a tremendous honour and something I would really like to do," Wright said. "First and foremost, Id like to be there for the All-Star game. But to be able to start it in your home park would be pretty special. I think (thats) an understatement." Given a rare heaping of run support, Harvey (7-1) allowed two hits in six innings and struck out six to earn consecutive wins for the first time since mid-April. The 24-year-old right-hander tossed four perfect innings and threw a season-low 72 pitches -- his outing was cut short by a 20-minute rain delay in the seventh. Collins said there was no argument when he informed Harvey he would not return after the delay, and the manager didnt want to take a chance with his young star. "I said, Nope, its not worth it," Collins explained. "The upside is too high." Harvey also hit an RBI double to deep right-centre and scored in a three-run fifth that made it 4-0. Later, he hit a line drive that knocked reliever Joe Saverys glove off his hand but was thrown out at first. Harvey became the first Mets starter to win twice in one season at Citizens Bank Park, where New York took two of three after winning a five-game series at first-place Atlanta. "He was really good," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "He was getting the ball over the plate. He was getting his slider on the outside of the plate against the left-handed hitters and he comes right after you." Wright hit his 12th home run in the ninth and finished a single shy of the cycle. But he wouldnt trade one of those doubles for a single. "I like doubles," Wright said. The club said the previous Mets player to have four extra-base hits in a game was Edgardo Alfonzo on Aug. 30, 1999, at Houston. New leadoff batter Eric Young Jr. had three hits and scored twice. Philadelphias only threat against Harvey came in the fourth, when Chase Utley hit a leadoff double and Ryan Howard worked a one-out walk. But Harvey got out of the jam by striking out Domonic Brown on a 99 mph fastball and retiring Delmon Young on a grounder. New York opened the scoring in the first when Marlon Byrd drove in Young with a sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Harvey helped himself by hitting the first of three RBI doubles for the Mets. Juan Lagares led off the inning with what appeared to be an easy fly to centre, but Ben Revere fumbled the ball in the exchange from his glove to his bare hand and it was ruled it a three-base error, opening the door for New York. The Mets added two more in the sixth. Josh Satin and John Buck drew back-to-back walks before Lagares chased Phillies starter John Lannan (0-2) with an RBI double. Buck scored on Omar Quintanillas sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Byrd hit an RBI double in the seventh after Wrights triple. Mets relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Brandon Lyon closed it out, handing the Phillies their seventh shutout of the season. Toronto has dropped games to Indiana and Miami since a five-game winning streak and closed out a three-game road trip at 1-2.After the Carolina Hurricanes were dumped 5-1 by the?New Jersey Devils?on Dec. 3, they officially became the worst team in the NHL. The Hurricanes were 30th in the standings, and 29th in goal differential, the power play and the penalty kill. Carolina called up some youngsters, and the youth movement, already in progress, was in full bloom. And then a funny thing happened to the Canes: They got younger and then they got better. They went 27-18-12 over their final 57 games -- a 95-point pace, projected over a full season -- and finished sixth on the penalty kill. It wasnt until Game 79 that Carolina was officially eliminated from the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. And we did that with a lot of young pieces, Hurricanes general manager and Hall of Famer Ron Francis said recently. Uncertainty remains at the ownership level as longtime owner Peter Karmanos continues to try to sell a portion of the team, sparking periodic rumors that it will relocate. That talk will die down -- and perhaps it will be easier to sell part or all of the team -- if the Canes continue to evolve on the ice.Biggest new facesFrancis was busy during the offseason, continuing to try to rebuild a franchise that had fallen into disrepair since its last playoff berth, a surprise trip to the 2009 Eastern Conference finals. Smallish but skilled Teuvo Teravainen joins an emerging young cast of forwards that includes new No. 1 center Victor Rask. Rask?had 21 goals last season, behind only team leader Jeff Skinner (28).Bryan Bickell came in the Teravainen deal as part of a salary dump by the?Chicago Blackhawks, but Francis is hoping Bickell can regain the form that saw him become an integral part of Chicagos 2013 Stanley Cup run. Veterans Lee Stempniak and Viktor Stalberg will help provide leadership in a room in which eight of the teams top nine returning scorers were born in the 1990s. The ninth in that group is graybeard?Jordan Staal, who just turned 28.Biggest unknownsWhile the Canes ended up middle of the pack in terms of goals allowed after a slow start, they were 27th in goals scored per game and 24th with the man advantage.Skinner, Rask and Staal are the only returnees who scored 20 or more goals last season. A more dynamic offense could pave the way to a long-awaited return to the playoffs.ddddddddddddCan the youthful defense continue its evolution? Noah Hanifin, Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce look to form half of Carolinas back end. All are big and skilled with tremendous upside. In fact, Slavin may yet turn out to be the best of the bunch. Jaccob is every underrated, I think, outside our team, Francis said. The plan, however, is to play the heck out of the group, says the GM. We dont hide them, said Francis. If they make a mistake, we put them right back out there. Finally, and this may be the most critical of the uncertainties, how will the goaltending shake out? There were more than a few arched eyebrows when longtime Carolina netminder Cam Ward was re-signed by the team. Eddie Lack had been extended after Lack came over from the?Vancouver Canucks,?but neither netminder was particularly good early last season. Francis did explore some trades and free agents but ultimately figured the two goalies he has represent the best options moving forward. If hes right, the Canes will be in the playoffs.Sure thingsIts still a bit hard to believe that Justin Faulk wasnt among those asked to represent the United States at the World Cup of Hockey, especially given the teams poor showing at the tournament. But Faulk may use that as incentive to continue his strong play in Carolina. He had 16 goals last season, tied for seventh among NHL defensemen, and his four game-winners were tied for fifth most.Head coach Bill Peters missed part of training camp because he was part of Canadas coaching staff at the World Cup. But there seems to be little doubt that Peters and his coaching staff, which includes longtime former Hurricane Rod BrindAmour and veteran NHL defenseman Steve Smith, are keys to keeping this young team marching forward.PredictionTheres so much uncertainty at the bottom end of the Eastern Conference standings that you can make a case for most, if not all, of the division teams that didnt make the playoffs to bounce back and sneak into one of the final few? postseason spots this season. Carolina is one of those teams. Third in the Metropolitan Division. ' ' '
