Mercedes boss Toto Wolff now admits the team was wrong to impose team orders on Lewis Hamilton during the championship showdown in Abu Dhabi.Hamilton caused controversy in the closing laps of the Yas Marina race, slowing his pace to back teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg into the chasing pack in a bid to boost his title chances. With the tactic putting Mercedes chances of recording a victory in jeopardy, Mercedes instructed Hamilton to speed up -- with executive director (technical) Paddy Lowe even coming on the radio to relay the order.Hamilton refused, later reasoning that he did everything he could do within the rules to try and win a fourth world title. After a few weeks of uncertainty Mercedes decided not to punish the three-time world champion and Wolff now believes the team was wrong to tell Hamilton how to drive at such a crucial point in the championship. In the heat of the moment, sometimes when you make decisions you get them wrong, Wolff told Sky Sports F1. In our mind, the way we think, this race was giving us the same number of points as other races and we try to win that one -- not considering that there was much more at stake for the drivers. How the race panned out, we should have communicated differently and in hindsight let them race in the way they deemed to be appropriate.Despite Hamiltons best efforts, Rosberg clung on to second position, scoring the podium finish he needed to be world champion. The team orders controversy was drowned out the following week when Rosberg sensationally retired from the sport just five days after claiming his maiden championship. There are various candidates for the vacant seat, including Fernando Alonso, Valtteri Bottas and even Jenson Button. Hamilton, known for not demanding number one status throughout his career, has said he does not care who his teammate is.Wolff -- who has admitted the team is considering Alonso, who partnered Hamilton during a tumultuous 2007 season at McLaren -- hopes Mercedes makes a decision which keeps the three-time world champion in a good place. It is like many other employees. We will give Lewis the information once weve come to a point where we think its a sensible decision and then inform him.He has been a great pillar in the teams success. When he came, everything changed, so he has played a role. Its very important to keep him in a good place. The dynamics between the two drivers is one of the factors we will consider. T.J. The 21-year-old was castigated for his mistake which led to the Netherlands first goal in their come-from-behind friendly win over England at Wembley on Tuesday.Even at such a young age Stones has built a reputation as a ball-playing centre-back, but his detractors say he should play the percentages once in a while and his midweek mistake was an example of his weakness. Martinez disagrees, however, with the level of pressure put on Stones. In my eyes he has been probably the victim of incredible scrutiny that is hard to explain, said Martinez. If we all want English football to do well and the national team to do well we should be a little bit more protective of our players. It is all too easy to praise a player and then too easy to criticise a player. I think we should be more rational about where the development is of a footballer. He is demanded by everyone to be the perfect footballer but thats not going to happen. Stones has started just one of Evertons last five games He has learned from his decision and what he does on the pitch. At 21 he is well ahead of where he should be and I think we should all be a bit more aware he is a young player.Stones has started just one of Evertons last five matches after returning from injury - and he was withdrawn at half-time in the game he did start. Stones battles for the ball with Swanseas Wayne Routledge Martinez has been criticised for keeping the youngster out of the side but the Toffees boss believes it will benefit him in the long run.ddddddddddddWe care about our players and the character he has is what is going to make him the player he can be, said the Spaniard ahead of the trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. In my eyes he has been probably the victim of incredible scrutiny that is hard to explain Roberto Martinez Competition for places keeps you grounded and allows you to understand the way you perform and levels you reach on the pitch have an effect on whether you are to be selected or not. That is a part of the process of developing and learning in your position and that is where John is.He should be given a bit more time, space and understanding. Clearly he has to learn and learn quickly and competition for places in our squad will force him to do that, not any other reason. You can watch Everton in action against Manchester United on Super Sunday.By purchasing a Sky Sports Day Pass for £6.99 or Sky Sports Week Pass for £10.99, you can enjoy access to all seven Sky Sports channels and watch on a TV with a NOW TV Box or on a range of devices.
