RIO DE JANEIRO -- Martin Kaymer is tired of talking about the golfers who arent at the Olympics.Even before the first shot is hit Thursday -- the official return of Olympic golf for the first time in 112 years -- Kaymer has spent enough time at other sports and with other athletes to remember whats important. And, for him, its not money. The most inspiring moment was meeting Andreas Toba in the elevator at the Olympic Village after the German gymnasts brave performance. Toba badly injured his knee during the floor exercise in team competition. Fighting through pain, he managed to go through the pommel horse routine and helped Germany advance to the finals.Compared to them, we are so weak in terms of our attitude sometimes, Kaymer said Wednesday. They do that sport with so much passion. They put all their heart in there. Some players, even from other sports, they dont come here. And you think, `How can you not want to come here? To meet those people ... that is why we all started our sport. When we were 12 or 15 years old, we went on the range. We didnt do it for money. We went because it was our love, what we wanted to do.When you play a sport where you make a lot of money, theres a good chance you lose a little bit of that passion.Kaymer did not single out any of the 21 golfers who withdrew from the Rio Games, nor did he suggest that every golfer is driven by money. He just doesnt understand why anyone would miss a moment like this. And it made him realize there is more to sport than winning majors and cashing in by accepting appearance fees around the world. Above all, it made him realize that I didnt do anything wrong by coming here.He cited the overloaded schedule -- three majors and a World Golf Championship in a seven-week span before he left for Rio -- and the PGA Tour players who begin the FedEx Cup playoffs with the $35 million in bonus money right after the Olympics are over.At the end of the day, I think most athletes really do it for the money, Kaymer said. Im not saying everybody does it, but a lot of the guys, they do things for money these days.Another meaningful moment for Kaymer was sitting down with Germanys field hockey team the other day. They dont make anything, he said. The pride they have in where they are from and what they do and what they can do here in these two weeks, its all they have for four years. And we dont show any appreciation for those guys.Instead, so much of the conversation has been the top players sitting out golfs return to the Olympics. Most of the absentees cited the Zika virus. Others mentioned schedules and their priorities, and there was underlying concern of security and safety.Golf provides a comfortable lifestyle. Five players on the PGA Tour already have crossed the $5 million mark for the season going into the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs. Kaymer knows he has it good. He happens to play a sport that gets more recognition than the athletes that have inspired him this week. But the actual work? The results? If you sit in a canoe or do rowing or jumping or whatever, they are the best in the world, he said. They dont have the status that we have, but that doesnt mean they are worse. The Olympic theme, that everyone is the same, I enjoy that.I enjoy so much to be with people who know why theyre here and why they do what they do, and they give it their all.Kaymer can only hope his peculiar habit of producing great moments in even-numbered years continues. He won the PGA Championship in 2010 for his first major. His par putt under enormous pressure gave Europe the decisive point in its Ryder Cup victory in 2012. He won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014.He would love to leave Rio with a gold medal around his neck. And he doesnt care whos at Olympic Golf Course. Its not easy to win, he said. The great thing about golf right now if from 60 players, probably 40 or 45 can win. Its a little disrespectful that they talk more about the people who stay home. And if he doesnt win a medal? That doesnt change a thing. No matter what happens this week, he said, its the greatest week of my life.Greedy Williams Browns Jersey . The catch: It needs a lot of money, and it needs it fast. Miikka Kiprusoff had just announced his retirement after a decade-long run in Calgary and it would be up to Berra and Ramo to fill the void.ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Hanley Ramirez fielded the grounder to first and saw Mike Trout steamrolling toward home. Ramirez rushed his throw just enough to send it sailing -- and to hand a victory to the Los Angeles Angels.Ramirezs throwing error to the plate on Daniel Navas bases-loaded grounder allowed two runs to score, and the Angels walked off with a stunning 2-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. The Angels rallied in the ninth against Boston closer Brad Ziegler (2-5), loading the bases with one out on singles by Trout, Albert Pujols and Andrelton Simmons.Pinch-hitter Nava then poked a potential game-ending grounder to first, but Ramirezs throw went flying past catcher Sandy Leon to the backstop, allowing Trout and pinch-runner Ji-Man Choi to end Bostons season-high fourth straight loss.We just gave ourselves a chance at the end of the game, Trout said. (Nava) put the ball in play, and he made the defense make a play.Or not, in the case of Ramirez, who grimly accepted responsibility. That cant happen, Ramirez said. I know better, and I know when Ive got Trout on third and a ground ball, but still Ive got to make that one. I kind of threw it and started running before I threw it.Ramirezs years of defensive misadventures are the stuff of nightmares for fans of the nearby Dodgers and the Red Sox.Thats a routine play that Hanley has made many times over, Boston manager John Farrell said. Unfortunately, we didnt execute defensively tonight as a club. ... Knowing the speed of Trout, he burned his throw at first base, and that was that.Ramirezs woes were set up by another shaky ninth from Ziegler, who lost for the second straight day and blew his third save of the season. The closer gave up a ninth-inning homer by Detroits Miguel Cabrera on Wednesday. It didnt work out, but theres a lot of other things you can point to that went wrong, Ziegler said.Ziegler and Ramirez wasted eight innings of seven-hit ball from David Price. The $217 million left-hander outdueled Jered Weaver, who pitched six-hit ball into the sixth inning, but was resigned to another hard-luck loss.I kept battling against a guy that was doing his thing, Weaver said. HHe made some good pitches, but the boys never stopped.dddddddddddd They kept grinding, and we were able to pull it out there in the ninth. It was awesome.David Ortiz reached base three times as the Red Sox opened an 11-game West Coast road trip with another heartbreaker for their sixth loss in seven games.Cam Bedrosian (2-0) pitched the ninth for Los Angeles.Boston scored in the third when Leon singled, scampered to third on Brock Holts single and came home on Mookie Betts fly to left.THE DAVID IS RIGHTPrice has been inconsistent over the past six weeks, mixing a handful of strong starts with rocky outings. He followed up eight shutout innings against Tampa Bay before the All-Star break by allowing 22 hits in 11 1/3 innings over his past two starts. He was back in form against the struggling Angels, limiting them to seven singles and one walk while striking out six. With the tying run on first in the eighth, Price struck out Kole Calhoun with a 94-mph fastball on his 109th and final pitch.ADIOS PAPIThe Angels paid an entertaining tribute to the retiring Ortiz before the game. A few Los Angeles players and coaches wore sunglasses, gold chains and backward caps while presenting Ortiz with a painting of himself. Ortiz and Pujols shared a long hug and then stood together in center field for the national anthem.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: Ortiz will get a rest day this weekend against one of the Angels two left-handed starters, Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs.Angels: Manager Mike Scioscia believes infielder Cliff Pennington will be ready to come off the disabled list Sunday as scheduled. He has played only three games since May 12 while struggling with a hamstring injury.UP NEXTRed Sox: Rick Porcello (13-2, 3.57 ERA) is in outstanding form with five consecutive winning starts as he tries to become the fourth 14-game winner in the majors.Angels: Tim Lincecum (2-4, 8.70 ERA) is still struggling mightily in his comeback season. He gave up eight runs and seven hits while getting just four outs against Houston last weekend. ' ' '
